The program at the last meeting of the Washington-Tyrrell County Unit of RSP informed the members of the benefits of being a member of the State Employees Association of North Carolina. Ms. Angela Edwards, Eastern Membership Representative of SENAC, along with local representatives, Rita Woods and Quinterlene Bowen, encouraged members to join the association to receive additional benefits.
The meeting continued with reports by officers and committee chairmen of the various club projects. A new project to collect coats and blankets to be sent to the counties so devastated by Hurricane Helene was introduced.
Alice Clagon suggested five steps to maintain a positive attitude at this busy time of the year. Members who have celebrated birthdays in this quarter were recognized. Everyone enjoyed the drawings for door prized at the end of the meeting. President Sharon McNair adjourned the meeting with wishes for happy holidays that are near.

The third quarterly meeting was held in September. The guest speaker was Dr. David O. White, Superintendent of Washington County Schools. Dr. White showed photos of the construction of the new Pre-K through 12th Grade school and explained the many innovative features of the facility. Dr. White also shared the grades received by schools in the county as the result of the most recent student performance test scores. He celebrated the improvements and spoke of ways the county is looking to show more growth by coordinating school staff, family, and community. The meeting continued with business, a memorial to deceased members since the last meeting, and a celebration of members with birthdays this quarter.

Members of Washington-Tyrrell County Retired School Personnel have been quite active this Fall. In August, officers and members attended the District Convocation in Washington County. They brought information about the benefits of the organization to future retirees. A tri-fold information board with pictures of local officers and committee chairs showed some of the projects that are sponsored. Flyers of organization information were also available.
President Sharon McNair welcomed members of the Washington/Tyrrell Counties Retired School Personnel to another exciting year with a display board of memories of the organization’s history. Recognition was given to the officers and chairpersons of committees to give their reports. Members who had passed since the last meeting were remembered with prayers and with cards of condolence that had been sent to their families.
Vice president Julius Walker, Jr. introduced Dr. David O. White, Ed.D., Superintendent of Washington County Schools, who reviewed the qualities of a classroom environment that would inspire students to “be better than they expect to be.” He reminded everyone that when teachers provide a good foundation in education and opportunities to succeed, the students are inspired to be life-long learners. He described how teachers are “ready, willing, and able” to encourage student to be anything they want to be.
Old business continued with reports from chairpersons about the service activities of members with the food pantry, nursing home visits, and other volunteer experiences. Thank you notes from recipients of the scholarships that had been awarded this school year were read.
In new business, members were provided tips of managing stress to maintain a good quality of life. Members were encouraged to attend the Fall Convention and to visit websites to stay informed about the many benefits available as members of the organization.
The meeting concluded with drawings for door prizes and the recognition of members with birthdays in this quarter. The meeting was adjourned with words of inspiration and encouragement.

School Supplies for Washington County
Our local unit with the assistance of Betty Littlejohn and Sharon McNair delivered school supplies to the schools. When we delivered supplies to the Kindergarten classes the superintendent and staff were on their break for a workshop. They took the time to take a picture with us giving out school supplies. We also donate coats and Toys for Tots to Department if Social Service and to the Food Pantry. Our local unit will continue to give donations through out the year.
