The Edenton/Chowan Retired School Personnel

Donates Food to the Edenton Food Pantry

Each year the members of the Edenton/Chowan Retired School Personnel bring in food items to be donated to the Edenton Food Pantry.  During this season of giving, the members of the Community Participation Committee, Mrs. Jeanette Stallings, Mrs. Roxie Satterfield, and Mrs. Patricia White, delivered canned goods and other nonperishable food items to the Food Pantry.  In addition to the food, this year, the Edenton/Chowan Retired School Personnel made a monetary donation to the Food Pantry as well.  We give out scholarships each year for a student who plans to go into the field of education.  We also fund snacks for the Boys and Girls Club once a month. In addition, members of the RSP are encouraged to volunteer in the community.

EDENTON/CHOWAN RETIRED SCHOOL PERSONNEL

HONORING OUR OLDEST ACTIVE MEMBER

During the February meeting of the Edenton/Chowan Retired School Personnel, we honored                                                      our oldest member, Mrs. Roxie Satterfield, who turned 90 years old on February 12,                                                      2021.  Mrs. Satterfield was born in  Enfield, NC, in 1931, and she is still active in our group.

Mrs. Satterfield graduated from Brick Tri-County High School in 1948.  She was a member of                                                    the Brick Tri-County High School Honor Society.  Mrs. Satterfield graduated from Elizabeth                                                        City State University in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education.                                                        She earned a Master of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Education at New York University.

Her professional career included 38 years as a teacher in the Edenton/Chowan School System                                                  where she taught first grade, second grade, and third grade.  Her favorite grade was first                                                        grade.  When asked why she became a teacher, Mrs. Satterfield stated that she was inspired                                                    by her high school English  teacher.  Mrs. Satterfield admired her teacher’s professionalism,                                                      the way she dressed, and her enthusiasm for teaching.

Mrs. Satterfield is very active in her church and community.  She loves working with children.  She is a member of Providence Baptist Church in Edenton, North Carolina, where she served as Youth Director for many years.  She worked with the youth in Sunday School, served as Youth Choir Director, and served as a teacher in Vacation Bible School.

As a Senior Citizen, Mrs. Satterfield enjoys going to the Senior Center and participating in the Senior Games. She has participated in such activities as basketball, stand-alone jump, the football throw, and the softball throw.

Mrs. Roxie Satterfield has been an active member of the Edenton/Chowan Retired School Personnel since she retired from teaching.  She served as secretary for several years and served as treasurer for over ten years.  At the age of 90, she is still active in the organization.  She helps to collect food for the Edenton Food Pantry and she enjoys planning activities for the June party and the Christmas party.
